Lis there all various types of Christmas Rose, belonging to the helibore family, I believe. This is a good pic of the type I associate with the name. I did some similar to this (just posted the photo) and I just used the 5 petal cutter. Then frilled with a ball tool and veined with a veiner tool. You can use quite a bit of poetic license I think with these flowers.
Thanks Katy, yours are so pretty !
How did you do the centre ? I FINALLY bought myself a ball tool today LOL What i was using was ok, but a little too big for smaller flowers .
Lis
Ball tool is a wonderful piece of kit. What you can achieve with it...........
The centre is simply a round piece of petal paste, indented on with a grass tip nozzle. You can use a sieve or the zesting side of a grater, quilting wheel or anything that that will give small indentations. I thought about adding stamens, but decided against it as I don't know whether there will be small children involved in some of the cakes that have been ordered. I wouldn't want them thinking everyone was edible and then getting a stamen caught in their throat on Christmas Day lol! So I just sprinkled them with pale yellow sugar crystal instead. This is a better pic just of the roses (before sprinkles added)
WOW !! They really are brilliant Katy. Ive got a grass nozzle i havent got round to using yet, along with a petal one !
I would of never thought of using that ! I keep coming across 'sugar crystals' ?
Im thinking of doing a smallish flower arrangement kind of thing without wires if that would work?
What did you dust with ?
lis
I didn't wire mine Lis as I'm not very good at it, and again, didn't want anything dangerous in there. I'm going to be laying mine flat on the cakes anyway (except for the spray of poinsettias which is going on our cake, so it doesn't matter). So yes, what you're doing would work. You could make the centre of your rose a bit thicker and put the back out so you have a little pointy hat at the back and you could push them in with that if you wanted. I'm assuming you don't have a Mexican hat mat. Sugar crystals are just tiny pieces of coloured sugar, I buy them at my local cake decorating shop. They're a bit like sprinkles. This is the kind of thing -

I dust with sugarflair edible lustre/blossom dust. Colours (if I remember rightly), were lemon yellow, soft peach, rose and pearl ivory.
Thanks Katy. I have a Mexican hat mat, is that the one with holes in ?
Thats what the sugar crystals look like, lol
The sugarflair lustre dust, ive got frosty holly, claret wine, glacier blue snowflake. And a dusky pink (normal) Would any of them be any good ? I havent got a yellow though.
ooh the colours sound wonderful. You could certainly use the dusky pink and I reckon the frosty holly would work too, just a little around the centre (many helibores have green tinges to them) and maybe the tiniest bit around the edge of the petals. Glacier blue is a gorgeous colour, but not very 'roselike', but then we are being creative here, so why not?
If you have the Mexican hat mat, you can roll your paste out on that and get the pointy bit I was talking about - yes it's the one with the holes in it.

Brilliant, thaks Katy. I looked at the sugarflair dusts and lustre dust in the cake shop today, and i nearly hit the floor at the priceof them !! Ive been getting mine off ebay free p&p and pay £1.74 ! They were over £2.70 in the shop !! The glacier blue is so beautiful .
Cant wait to try this, im a little woried about the fruit cake though :-(
If the Grinch is tired later i can get on and try to make one !
Lis
If you're using Les' recipe, don't worry about it, it will come out perfectly. I'm very hit and miss with fruit cakes, but Les's worked like a dream and is delicious.
Yep, those dusts are a ferocious price and the cost does vary. I find the shops are almost always more expensive than the net.

I was going to try Les's recipe, but i need it for a 7" or a 9" He did say he would mail it to me but i think he was busy. And i didnt want to pester him.
I was comparing the prices of the moulds and patchwork cutter etc and they are slightly cheaper on Ebay. The prob is with the sugarflair lustre/dusts theres so many and i keep saying ooh got to get that one..oooh and that one lol
Oh OK. I thought I saw somewhere that he said you could use one of his sizes with a different size tin.....so for a 7" tin use the 8" recipe, it just wouldn't come out quite so deep. Anyway, no matter, I'm sure what you do will be terrific - you seem to have a real flair for the caking, so don't fret it lol!
Oh yes and I'm the same with those damn colours, just drool over them.

If i could be as good as you, id be really happy !
Im sure they are tempted to turn the sign to ' CLOSED' when they see me heading for the shop door lol
I could spend hours looking and "ooh got to have one of them.." Ha!
