Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

Hello everyone,

Has anyone ever used any techniques to give the appearance of translucent water over fondant?

I'm going to be making a Luau cake and I wanted to give a tidal appearance on sand. I'm thinking of using the cornstarch rub technique to make the fondant look like sand and I was thinking of using melted candy tinted blue. However, I wanted to make sure the fondant beneath doesn't melt.

I could also use tinted butter cream with white airbrushing to give a foam look, but I'm still not sure.

Your advice would be greatly appreciated. :)

I always use piping gel =)  You can use gel colors to tint it, or color your fondant the color you want, and then put the gel over it.   Here's a good pic showing one I did this way.  Hope it helps.

oh, you can then swirl white gel color in to give the foam look.

That looks fantastic, jennie, thanks for the suggestion! I love the green with the fish... reminds me of a Japanese restaurant.
