Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

I have used MMF for cakes and cookies and love it for the most part. However, I've not yet tried it on a dummy cake..any tips... imputs.. welcomed...also trying to figure out how much MMF to make for an 8', 12' & 16' square dummy cake plus a 20' board...I'm coming out with about 16 pounds (if I was using regular fondant) would the same apply for the MMF?

Hi Deb. You can wet the dummy with water, or brush it with piping gel, or shortening like crisco, any of these will work. You would only need about 5 pounds to cover everything. 16 pounds sounds like alot.  Take an emory board nail file to smooth out the edges of your dummy a little. It just takes off the sharpness on the edge. The fondant seems to tear off at the edge sometimes. Let me know if you need anything else. Oh, the same amount applies to MMF or store bought fondant.

Thanks Ruby :) I've had pretty good luck with the store bought fondant & MMF on a regular cake..even the MMF on a regular cake but never tried the MMF on a dummy cake, and I was concern rather or not it would adhere ok to the dummy cake since I find that my MMF seems to be less stif than regular fondant. Thanks, for the additional tips as well  :)

No problem. I used to be a Wilton Instructor. Had to teach covering cakes with fondant on dummies and baked cakes. You should do fine. Its actually easier to do dummies, cause you can pick them up, not like a real cake.
Funny I just did an experiment on a 6" round with MMF. I covered the styrofoam with cling wrap VERY TIGHT and then taped it on the bottom (this way when I take the cake apart I can reuse the styrofoam without a mess). I Sprayed a little water over the covered dummy with a spay bottle then covered it with the MMF. The cake is now 2 weeks old and the fondant is smooth. No problems.

Thanks for the tps Glenda...I'm getting excited to give the MMF & cake dummy a try :)

I just tried it with crisco like Ruby Johnson suggested. I was able to take the fondant off and reuse the dummy with no problems.
