Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

I made this Dora cake a few weeks ago based on  a pic I had from internet. I did not have a pan, so I had to cut out the shape. This cake has 2 tiers with vanilla cream and fresh strawberries inside. Hair is from chocolate ganache and colorful parts of cake are vanilla-almond buttercream - no shortening just regular butter. How much would you ask for a cake like this?

I charged $27 dollar with delivery.

After posting on internet, one lady asked about price and I post same price. She never replied. I guess, that is the reason why I am wondering about price. Was it too much?

Go back to the price per serving.  A 6x4" round serves 12; cuppies minimum of $2 each.

Oh my,   I think you REALLY, REALLY, REALLY udercharged for that cake.   First of all it's adorable and great job.   Second of all - how much time did it take you to make?   I would bet it took a chunk of time, plus materials, and ingredients.    I hope that you at least charged enough to cover your cost.

I'm just an amateur too, but I've decided that my time away from my family is worth something too.   I would actually bet the woman didn't get back to you because she didn't believe how low your price was.

Majka ~ In addition to all the comments posted, you also have to consider the fact that you carved that cake and did not use a pan.  You totally undercharged for that cake and you should sit down and start working out a pricing chart.  Once you start making more cakes and gaining new customers, you should slowly bring your prices up.  Good luck!  ~ D
27$ with delivery seems LOW to me. How long did it take you to make? What was the price of the strawberries? How far was the delivery? All of these things add up. Where I work that cake would have cost at least 85$. for the smallest cake we make.
I know I probably undercharged the cake. I just have an issue to ask more since I do my baking from home and I do not have license. Price of strawberries was $1.50 and I drove about 5 miles to deliver. Decorating took me "forever". I guess, I am learning on my own mistakes - same with pricing.
Thank you Cindylou! :)

I agree..I just looked at the picture and you did not charge enought...I had sold a few charater cakes and charged 25.00 for them but than I took into consideration the customer bought the pan and the colors and she came and picked the cake up...I may not have charged enought either but just starting out was not sure on how they priced them..I did quite a few cakes for this lady...even when she ordered one at the last minute she gave me extra for doing it...I guess some of us need a lesson on how to price cakes.. And by th way great job on the cake, very nice

Thanks. I hope it will get better one day :)

It is a cute cake! However, be careful with posting prices on character cakes as there is an issue with rights. Legally, you cannot sell character cakes. They can be baked for personal consumption and you can give as presents but you cannot legally charge any money for a character cake. There is a large discussion thread on Cake Central and/or Wilton about someone being sued by Disney due to a character cake being sold.
I just saw the picture of your cake and it was adorable.  I bake from home as well and do not have my license yet but your time is still worth something as well as the ingredients.  I usually call some local bakeries and find out what they charge and then I underbid by $10 -15.  I also tell the customers to call these bakeries if they think my price is too high and when they do, many come back to me.  Everyone wants to save money and I provide quality ingredients as I am sure you do.  Go to some of your local bakeries and ask for a price list and that will help you in the future.

Thanks for the heads up...wasn't aware of that!

Wait a minute!...you carved that cake out by hand? without a pan?...OMG!....and you only charged 27 dollars?....Listen babygirl, and listen carefully...your ingredients cost you more than 27 dollars...the time it took you to decorate was more than 27 dollars...DON'T short change yourself...all the detail and the hours you spend for baking, going to the store, gas for your car...You need to add up all your time and roundabout a figure from there....I just saw a picture of that cake. What an AMAZING job you did...  Now i don't know how small your town is, but do your research and find out what they would charge, that's what i did when i started with my cupcakes. But that Dora cake i would not sell less than 95 dollars....I hope this helps you...God Bless you in your business!..

You are welcome. If you follow the Wilton's forums, I believe there is some info about it.
