I suppose that depends on who you ask. People have very different tastes across the board and, what is beautiful to one person may not appeal to the next. I believe a good decorator is someone who puts their heart and soul into turning out the best cake they possibly can and strives to learn more with each and every cake they send out of their kitchen.
Good one Ü. I think passion on everything you do and doing things like they are for you and of course practice.
Hi Teneisha, I think a good cake decorator is someone who is approachable, willing to listen to a clients wishes and is responsive at the same time being honest about what is possible. I try to treat each and every order I receive as if it were an order for my own children or close family and the more preparation time you allow the better.
I love the responses guys....I'm doing an evaluation of myself...will consider all that you have said...will let you know how it goes :)
I think a good decorator should be able to take constructive criticism about their cakes.
good point Jennifer!

I believe that a good decorator should be able to listen to the clients wishes, and work with them for the result they want. I was dealing with a decorator who really thought she was doing her clients a favor by selling them on HER ideas because those were her strong points. I tried to convince her that just because it was what she was good at might not be what the client wanted. I love when someone brings pictures of 4 or 5 cakes and says I like this and this and this and this and I can put together what they want. It's never about the designer... it's about the client. And the cakes don't always turn out to my taste but as long as it is what they want... I'm thrilled!

The second point is honesty with yourself. If you truly can not take on what someone has asked you to... be honest and tell them it is above your skill level. I would rather send a client elsewhere and have them happy than to take on something I can not do.
Great answer Jeri - I totally agree!
