do i cover the whole cake in the red and add blue

or do i cut it all in stripes and stick it on to the cake?

Either works depending on the design of how you want the cake to look. Laying the stripes on top won't look as realistic as cutting in the stripes. You could always cover the whole thing with white fondant and paint the shirt the way you want.
I would cover the cake in fondant and add the stripes. Just roll them thin and you should be ok.
sounds like a plan. Good Luck I'm sure it will be great. I must say I HATE working with fondant:)
You can also roll out your base color fondant slightly thicker than you would use to cover the cake, lay thin strips of the contrasting color on top, adhering with a little bit of water, and then roll the two together.  Just be sure you use even pressure and try to keep the stips from distorting too much.  You'll want to use light pressure.

I love your fondant cake, just do it what you want but you must to think if its fit, stripes is beautiful
