What exactly is the difference between luster dusts, pearl dusts, petal dusts, etc?? I want to buy some but I'm really confused as to what is what. If I could get a list and explanation I would love it!! Thank you!!

Each type has a different finish...

Luster Dust and Shimmer Dust are pretty much the same and they give a bit of a sheen to the finish

Sparkle Dust has a sparkle kind of a very very soft glittery finish without looking like glitter

Petal Dust is more concentrated and the colors are more vibrant

Pearl Dust gives a pearly finish

Metallic Highlihgters are the golds, silvers bronzes that look like a metal finish and most are not ment to be consumed.

Crystal Dust is a lot like petal dust and the colors are very nice.

Can you tell I have invested just a hair bit of $$$$ in dusts???  I have a nice collection.   I bought some DVD's and books Nicholas Lodge is the best and they explain how to use them, blend them etc.

Wow thank you! That really helps me out. I have 2 Wilton dusts but I wanted something a little better. I may end up like you! Lol

There are also higher and lower quality dusts & colorants.  The typical dust has a base of talc, which is non-toxic and it helps to stick to the gumpaste.  Higher end colors like Crystal Colors use only pure food color and are much more intense.

There are also the Disco Dusts, and there is a difference between the original by Sunflower Sugar Art and the knock off.  Sunflower's has a better color to it & more shimmer, it also has less fillers.

Good explanation Jeri.

Yup! I've ordered from you before. I've talked with Alex a couple times too. Very helpful! Thank you both!

And MOST important... be sure when you are working with them... you keep your work area and your floor covered.... and don't have any breezes blowing... no fans on... the fine particles get in the air and carry all over the place!  I dusted a cake with pearl dust once and was not thinking and my Christmas Cactus was very shimmery... along with everything else in the room!  Needless to say.  I am MUCH more careful now!!!
This is a very helpful guide for a newbie - thanks! I only have 3 jars of Wilton pearl dust - I'm scared to let myself go as I'm one of those color nuts who'd want to buy every color, and maybe every color of every type and brand, LOL :) But I'm keeping this for reference!

Unless they have improved them recently the Wilton dusts are not worth the $$!

Save your hard earned $ for the real thing.  This is a case of where it is much better to invest the extra money in the best you can afford.   As I remember Sunflower Sugar arts is one of those 'best' :)

I prefer Beth Parvu (Sugarpaste) Crystal colors and Crystalized colors because they are FDA approved.  I won't use any others.  I love the Crystalized (similar to luster dust and gives a nice, satiny look) Fairy Pink the best.  I often will put the crystalized colors especially Bright Silver in with any of the "flat" colors for that beautiful shine.  Mixing colors is great, too.  I like to put some "Impatient Pink" in with the "Fairy Pink" to give it a deeper pink and a bit different in shade/color.  Yellow mixed with gold is very pretty, too.
Oh Diane is soooooo right!  I couldn't remember Beth Parvu's name or I would have mentioned her:)
