Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

So, what did everyone think of The Next Great Baker? I was so excited to watch it and then I realized I missed it at 10 pm. I saw our member Jay Qualls in the commercial, so I'm really dying to find out when the first episode is airing again.

All i can say is  I love the show , Its funny and Interesting,  but I Definitely think the wrong person went home yesterday, i think corina should have gone home and from the preview for next week seems corina does the same type thing to Pam, like she did to whats his name, , My lord the girls got issues LOL

I agree with you on that she is not a Team player. she wonted to run the hole show.

it was like her way or the highway.

not a good way to be they were all in it together.

she act like no one could do it like her.

that was not a cool thing to do .

she should have been the one going home just for not being a team player.

she is going to make trouble the hole time she is on the show.

Totally agree Next week is going to be interesting to see how this all plays out, since its supposed to be girls vs boys , doing chirstmas cakes LOL , Im Excited  cant wait to see it hehehe

One of the contestants said on his facebook that basically the environment conditions suck for cake making.  "hot and humid"

I thought that too, Theresa.  I'm wondering about the conditions there.  The only thing I can think is that it MUST be really hot in that kitchen.  I've never seen fondant and buttercream melt so fast (the corner of the Monopoly cake caving in like that?? I KNOW they know to at least support their edges!)

Was so glad to see how well Jay did!! GO JAY!! :)

Okay, so I finally got to watch the first episode when it aired before the second yesterday.  Was the show more interested in entertaining personalities than in talent?

Realistically, whatever you may think of Corina's attitude, if you did all the work on a cake and someone else was bossing you around and going to take credit for it, you'd be pretty pissed off. I'm not saying she handled it the right way, but what was Joe doing during all those hours the two girls were working hard on the cake?  It's like teaming up with someone on a project in school, doing all the work and someone else taking the credit. Haven't we all been there? I know I have.

I do Totally agree with you on that part theresa, with corina and johanna being the ones who did all the cake and joe only working on the boots as johanna said, during judgement,  and joe trying to take all the credit for what corina and johanna did i would get just as annoid, I wasnt meaning that its not ok to get annoyed when people tick you off thats only natural, Just to find a different way of expressing your anger , Thats all i meant  LOL

I think the whole premise behind the nasty competition comments is that is exactly what the producers want. They want people to get evil because it makes for better tv. In fact, one of the questions the contestants had to answer was about how competitive they were. Competition leads to fights and fights make people watch. Just look at Cake Boss, and how often they show Buddy bickering with his sisters, his mother, etc. It's drama. So, they probably wanted Corina because they thought she'd make for good drama and they probably wanted Jay to say what he said.  Hopefully, Jay will come back on the site and let us know his side of the story.

I completely agree with Linda.  This does happen in the real world and again, what Jay say - I heard it too.  Sorry but I agree.  I know this is a competition and it supposed to have some conflicts but this is bring out the worst in some of the people.

Just watching these few shows and my DH - I made him sit with me, LOL - we've already decided who the top two were going to make it to the end.  These two have shown teamwork and leadership along with sensitivity and talent.  These would be the two people if we were working in a JOB that we would want to work with.  So I would do business with these two people should I need a cake.  I'm not going to tell who these two people are yet but I promise I will later.

A sure fire way to create "good TV" is to do a team project.  There has not been one person in this household that has been put on a team project and have everybody contribute equally, whether it be a school project or work project.  When my kids complained about it for school projects, our answer was to get used to it because it happens at work too.  Some day, some where all those project "slackers" are going to get put on the same project.  What will happen then? ;)

And Joe's way of leading was to walk around and ask "how's it going?" Asking how it is going does not make one a team leader.  He knew he couldn't decorate at all.  He probably thought we was getting off easy being the team leader.  I could see that they were setting him up for a fall.

And I'm sorry, I don't know Jay that well from this forum.  But in the first episode when he said that he was going around to win their confidence so that he could then sabotage and then gave that grin he gave sent a shiver down my spine.  I noticed that this scene was edited out when they aired the show the second time, along with the leaving the oven on scene.  I specifically pointed them out so DH could see it.  Luckily I had also DVRed.   I could not to do that on television for the world to see and then have to face my kids.  It is not example I would want to show them, I don't care how much you win.  It just goes against my values.  I hope that this was all editing on the producer's part and this is not the real Jay.

Believe me, I don't act like that and don't approve of the behavior, but I do think that some of what they do is an act for television.

Oh my, I didn't make myself clear enough.  You are CORRECT, Theresa!  Shows need conflict!  I bet they even said to the participants they have to come out of their comfort zone and do something like that too.  That is why there are TV Shows!!!  In the real world (outside of TV) - I still stand on my views.  By the way, there is nothing wrong in confidence and I like that what I don't care for is the knife situation, that was totally wrong!!!

Drama must be placed into a show.  Heck, I probably wouldn't have watch Buddy's original show if he didn't play tricks on his crew or have his very loud yelling family.  Mind you I had to lower the sound when I knew they were going to have a bit in the show!  LOL!!!  Drama drama drama - better in their life than mine!

So I know that I didn't make myself clear and I apologize.  That gal should have been kicked off and I would not do business with her.  The other guy admitted he didn't play a role as he should have been, being a leader and Participating with the team.  Joe (I think) did say he knew his limitations and let the ladies take over so that was good that he admitted his faults and he did apologize.

Don't worry. I'm not getting offended or anything :)

When they were looking for people for the show, they wanted anyone who baked or decorated cakes, so they really didn't care if the person was professional or not. There are plenty of great bakers who don't decorate cakes and there are great cake decorators who aren't so much into the baking, so I'm not surprised that you see some of both going on with the contestants.

I think they were trying to add a "Simon" judge... mouthy, rude, etc... All an act, if you ask me! She is a bit annoying, though! LOL! But I still love the show! Go Jay!!!

Nikki Riley said:

I agree that they must have went on personality than skills. I was suprised at the skill level & the truck bit is ridiculous. I would say no thank you and catch a cab. Also, I don't agree with his sister being sucha a loud mouth judge. She doesn't decorate cake, she sells it. Understandably she see's and has been around cake for probably her whole life, but still....They would have t bring out the censor button for me on there if she got mouthy about my cake. LOL.

Theresa - I had actually downloaded the application form for the show to see what they asked - it was HUGE - don't remember how many pages.  But you're right - there are bakers who don't decorate and decorators who aren't so much into the baking.  I was thinking as I watched the show, "I'd be asking where the Duncan Hines mix was" - LOL!  About half my cakes start with a mix that I then doctor or add to, so I'd be messed up if I had to come up with a recipe off the top of my head from scratch.  I wonder if they were allowed to bring their recipe books with them? (I have a binder).
