Airbrush maybe?
Hmmm... I suppose, but I don't have an airbrush machine. Can I hand paint it? I just didn't know if there were any "tricks" to doing this.

What exactly will it have to look like? You could do fondant cut outs... different widths of ribbon all intertwined and some hand painting or piping with royal icing.

.
hmmm, similar to the basket weave technique perhaps? Heck, I would just keep in mind what a checker board looks like and try that with equal size squares pre-cut in colors of fondant placed onto the buttercream base. Sounds like a fun project and I can't wait to see the colors you will be using and the finished creation! Have fun!!!
You can cut thin strips of fondant in the colors you wish. Then lay them on top of a rolled out sheet of fondant in your base color. Once you have laid out the strips on the base sheet in the plaid pattern you want, then roll over them with your rolling pin and press the pieces into the whole. You will have to be very careful to keep your lines straight. Try this and see what sort of result you get. Good luck and let us know what you do and how well it works.
Thanks so much, ladies! That gives me a place to start/different ideas!!! I get the feeling this one will be quite time-consuming, if I want it done right. Wish me luck! :-)
If I were doing plaid I'd probably hand paint it. Just get a photo of what you want... or Luck's has some edible images that are plaid... much easier.
Diana are you covering a cake or making a figure with the plaid?
It's to cover the top, smaller tier.

I was thinking about edible images, but felt having too much of it on the cake would take away from the flavor. Idk...

Thank you! I will check out the tutorial.

Funny you should ask, I just printed out this great tutorial earlier today. Now this is done with an airbrush, but maybe if you used a stencil and dusting powder thinned with alcohol you could hand paint it by allowing each layer of color to dry completely before starting the next. I am thinking ahead to my son's birthday in November because he is a Campbell on his father's side of the family and a McKenzie on my side.

This is so great. I have saved it to my files on my computer until I get all of the supplies. Perhaps I can try it free hand with a template?
